On the last day of AgEx, lawyer Morgan Camley, who specializes in agribusiness with Dentons, gave a keynote about how animal rights organizations are becoming an even bigger threat to farmers. She says that existing two-years-less-a-day penalties aren't enough to protect farms. "If you're committed to a cause, this is just the cost of doing business. We need an enhancement in terms of some of the criminal sanctions."

The bomb cyclone that hit the South Coast on Tuesday could boost avian influenza infections in the Fraser Valley. "I think we all, notionally, know what could be coming," Clayton Botkin, executive director of the poultry sector's emergency operations centre told a producer townhall this week. Riparian sediments harbour the highly pathogenic virus, and storms create the conditions for their spread. But the good news is response crews are keeping pace, depopulating flocks within three days of detections. "It's incredible compared to prior years, and it really is because of our ability to deploy crews to key sites," Botkin said. A total of 45 premises in BC have been infected since October 21, with close to a million birds impacted.

I knew this was more like a nuke storm or biological weapon cyclone. Dont be shy and yea language which is appropriate for gusty winds and rain .....

The vast majority of cases in BC are in commercial flocks. You know, the folks who are supposed to have the tightest biosecurity to protect their investments.

Today marks one year since the death of long-time Country Life in BC contributor and editor emeritus David Schmidt -- arguably the senior statesman of BC farm journalists. During its annual awards ceremony in Halifax last month, the Canadian Farm Writers Federation announced it would honour David's legacy through the David Schmidt New Writer of the Year Award. Lana Popham is back as the province's agriculture minister with today's announcement of the province's new cabinet. Popham succeeds Pam Alexis, who lost her seat in October's provincial election, and returns to a role she lost during a cabinet shuffle in December 2022. Also of interest to farmers is the appointment of Sunshine Coast MLA Randene Neill to Water, Land and Resource Stewardship, where she'll be overseeing groundwater licensing. Langford-Juan de Fuca MLA Ravi Parmar will oversee Forests, a role that will be close#BCAgtched by ranchers.
